1.1 Research on the range and types of creative and media activity in the Southbank

To familiarize myself with the South Bank I had to conduct some research into the four major creative areas Art & Photography, Performing Arts (Theatre), Film and Music. I had to look at venues that came under the four major creative areas and research about the events that are taking place there.

1.1 Performance

           Performing Arts (Theatre)

The Globe

The globe theatre is a very close replica of the open- air playhouse that was built in 1599 and was where Shakespeare worked and chose to write most of his infamous plays.  Every year the theatre seasons run between the months of April- October showcasing productions by Shakespeare and his contemporaries as well as modern writers.

Much ado about nothing
21ST May – 1st October

Claudio loves Hero and Hero Claudio and nothing seems capable of tearing them apart. Claudio’s friend Benedick loves Beatrice and Beatrice Benedick, but (because neither will admit it) nothing seems capable of bringing them together. Only the intrigues of a resentful prince force Benedick to prove his love for Beatrice – by killing his best friend.

The Royal Festival Hall

The Royal Festival Hall is at the centre of the south bank complex. Opened in 1951 as a part of the Festival of Britain. And is one of the worlds most infamous performance venues. Not only does it have an auditorium it also consists of the Clore Ballroom, South bank centre shop, 7 places to eat and drink and the Salson poetry library. When I visited the Royal Festival Hall on the outside it looked quite old and boring but when I entered the foyer I could see that it was very modern and had a lot of big open spaces.

Ottorino Respighl -Fountains of Rome
Max Bruch -Violin Concerto No.1 in G minor interval
Peter llyich Tchalkovsky - Symphony no.4
Respighi is renowned for his superb orchestrations (as befits a student of Rimsky-Korsakov) - both of other composers' music and in original works such as the captivating The Fountains of Rome.
Although he composed several choral and orchestral works (including three concertos for the violin and one for two pianos), Bruch's fame today rests largely on one phenomenally successful piece - the Violin Concerto in G minor. Richly melodic and sumptuously orchestrated, this enchanting concerto is beloved of performers and audiences alike.
Although it is tempting to relate Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony to the suicidal despair caused by his disastrous marriage, he had in fact sketched the first three movements before meeting his future wife. In any event, he later maintained that the symphony was an'echo' of the events in his life, in which the sinister fanfares of Fate are ultimately swept away by an indomitable reaffirmation of life.

1.1 Film

Film

The Imax

The BFI London Imax is located within the centre of Waterloo in the middle of a roundabout. It has fast become a major tourist attraction since it’s opening in 1999 and has become something of a London landmark. It’s a state of the art cinema with a circular design and glass exterior where films are shown in Imax format. The Imax was specifically designed to absorb sound, as it is perched just above a tube line and surrounded by the noisy bustle of road traffic. There are just 60 Imax cinemas in the world at present. The fist thing that stood out to me about the Imax was its shear size it was so modern and contemporary and then when I entered inside it was like stepping inside a plush old-fashioned hotel and the lighting of the cinema gave a mysterious atmosphere the only thing that gave it away as a cinema was the ticket bureau located near the front.

Tangled 4 February - 6 March
Tangled is an action-packed, swashbuckling, animated musical comedy about the girl behind 70 feet of magical, golden hair. A princess stolen from her parents’ castle as a baby, Rapunzel is locked in a hidden tower longing for adventure. Now an imaginative and determined teenager, she takes off on a hilarious, hair-raising escapade with the help of a dashing bandit.

The Hayward Gallery

The Hayward gallery located in the hub of Creative and media activity the South Bank is an art gallery renowned for showcasing contemporary art.   It was opened by The Queen in 1968 and is named after the late Sir Isaac Hayward, the former leader of London County Council. My experience of the Hayward art gallery was good it was a nice building and was very contemporary that showcased a lot of 3-d art that is always changing it was also very spacious.
